Enabling Connectivity and Convenience for a Commercial Vehicle Manufacturer

Connected Convenience for Commercial Vehicles

A commercial vehicle manufacturer wanted to provide its first connected van to support their customers with proactive maintenance for both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs). By leveraging connected vehicle data as well as providing a mobile app for drivers, the company was able to launch a new, fully connected lightweight commercial vehicle (LCV) that ensures higher utilization and enhances both operational efficiency and convenience for drivers.

Challenge

As the commercial vehicle sector gradually shifts to electric vehicles, commercial vehicle manufacturers face unique industry challenges. Equally important, both for ICEs and EVs, is uptime and the need to maximize vehicle utilization. Commercial vehicle operations cannot afford having trucks and vans out for service unexpectedly or for too long. To ensure peak efficiency, proactive maintenance is critical.

A commercial vehicle manufacturer decided to launch its first connected van as both an ICE vehicle and EV. In order to meet its goals of optimization and connected convenience, it needed an experienced partner to securely integrate and pipe the vehicle data. A companion app for drivers was also required to ensure a smooth and personalized experience.

Solution

To offer a consistent experience across vehicle platforms, WirelessCar used its expertise in connected vehicle integration to enable the communication of vehicle data between different backends. By building a smart adapter to pipe the data, the vehicle manufacturer was able to seamlessly connect to the vehicle, ensuring they could monitor vehicle health and provide maintenance much faster. WirelessCar’s DevOps team also needed to send data about service activation and ensure that certain legal requirements were met before the vehicles could become operational.

Additionally, WirelessCar delivered a companion app that allows drivers to better adapt to changing circumstances via status alerts for the vehicle. Convenient services such as remote climate controls and charging activation were enabled. As a result, the company ensured that the vehicle is personalized according to the driver’s schedule.

Outcome

By being a flexible and transparent partner, WirelessCar delivered a solution to the customer that resulted in the successful launch of its first connected vans in Europe. WirelessCar’s technical knowledge and speed were two critical success factors in the delivery, which was completed on time and accommodated changing specifications. By launching a fully connected van and driver companion app, the manufacturer stands out from its competitors. The resulting ICE and electric vehicles are more efficient, ensuring optimal uptime via proactive maintenance, and offer greater customization and personalized services.
